1. Choose the right tree and location

Cats are curious, not clueless. A wobbly tree? That’s basically an invitation to see how far it can tilt.
Keep this in mind:

  • Place the tree on a sturdy, stable stand
  • Pick a spot your cat can’t easily jump onto (so not next to a sofa, cabinet, or windowsill)
  • Got a real tree? Make sure your cat can’t drink the water from the stand: it can cause tummy aches

Even better: put the tree up for a few days without decorations so your cat can get used to it again.

2. Hang decorations strategically

To cats, Christmas baubles look exactly like toys begging to be swatted.
Keep things safe by:

  • Hanging fragile baubles at the top
  • Using unbreakable decorations at the bottom (plastic, wood, fabric)
  • Avoiding angel hair, thin ribbons and tinsel. It can be very dangerous if swallowed
  • Using a tree skirt or basket around the base to keep curious paws away

3. Make the tree extra sturdy

If the tree moves, your cat will see that as a challenge.
What helps:

  • Adding extra weight to or inside the stand
  • Securing the tree with a subtle piece of string attached to a wall hook so it can’t topple over

4. Be careful with lights and décor

Cables and glitter are tempting, however not always safe.
Watch out for:

  • Cords: hide them or use cable protectors
  • Fake snow spray, chemical glitter or scented sprays
  • Real candles: opt for LED instead

5. Offer your cat something even more fun

Give your cat a better alternative than your Christmas tree.
Ideas:

  • A scratching post or cat toy in Christmas theme
  • An empty box (you know how successful that always is)
  • Extra play sessions so they’ve got less energy left to explore the tree
A peaceful holiday season for you and your cat

Cats and Christmas trees can coexist perfectly: as long as you set the tree up smartly and safely. With the right spot, a stable base and thoughtful decoration choices, your tree will look beautiful and be completely cat-proof.
