What would Halloween be without cats? Their piercing gaze and mysterious presence have made them a symbol of this enchanting night for centuries. But did you know that Halloween wasn’t always about “scary things”? Behind the pumpkins, candles and cobwebs lies an ancient ritual filled with stories about nature, the balance between light and darkness, and yes, about cats too. In this blog, you’ll discover how cats came to play a starring role in the history of Halloween, what the celebration truly means, and how you can enjoy it together with your cat.

The origin of Halloween: where it all began

Long before pumpkins and costumes, the Celts celebrated Samhain on 31 October. A festival marking the transition between summer and winter. They believed that on this night, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead became thinner.

💡 Spirits could briefly return, so people lit candles to protect themselves.

Cats were once seen as guardians of the unknown: creatures able to move between worlds. Their nocturnal nature and mysterious stare made them the perfect symbol for all things unexplainable. And so began the centuries-old link between cats, magic and Halloween.

Witches, superstition and cats: a centuries-old connection

During the Middle Ages, the mystical image of cats took on a darker edge. People believed that witches kept cats (especially black cats) as companions, and could even transform into cats themselves to roam the night unseen.

This superstition spread quickly across Europe. Cats became symbols of mystery, magic, and sometimes fear.
Luckily, we now know better: cats aren’t dark creatures, but intelligent, intuitive animals that fit perfectly with the mysterious atmosphere of Halloween.

Today’s Halloween: a mix of spooky and cosy

Nowadays, Halloween is less about fear and more about creativity and fun.
Pumpkins on the windowsill, a scary movie on TV… and a cat staring outside as if he’s spotting ghosts.
How to celebrate Halloween with your cat:

  • Create a cosy corner with a blanket, cat tree and some Halloween decorations
  • Use safe decorations (avoid real candles or toxic plants)
  • Play with light . Cats love chasing shadows!
  • Snap a photo of your cat and tag @rhr_pets
Why Halloween isn’t complete without cats

From ancient rituals and witch tales to horror films and sweet treats: cats belong to Halloween like the moon belongs to the night. Their mysterious behaviour, quiet gaze and cheeky charm make the evening just that bit more thrilling. So light a candle, give your cat a comfy spot, and enjoy the spookiest night of the year together.

Sadly we lost Arni last year but he left us lots of memories. One of the best had to be one Saturday evening my husband and I were downstairs watching tv. Suddenly the lights went off and left us in the dark. It’s 10:30 at night so a strange time for this to happen. We looked out the window and the rest of the street has light. We used our phone as a torch and went to investigate what had happened. My husband finally found out that Arni had puked in our extension lead, in our bedroom and fused the whole house. He wasn’t named Captain Pukesville for nothing😂

My beloved old boy Herman von schnitzel pants was a jumper..he would launch himself onto your back and shoulders as you passed.
We had a telephone repair man working at our home,I belatedly remembered saying " oh must warn you Herman will try and help,he may also splat cat on your back"…the gentleman laughed and said “ah that’s what he was attempting?”,…Herman had chosen an inopportune moment to launch himself at the man’s back…as he bent down a baffled Herman sailed neatly over his head face first into the wall!!
I am pleased to.report Herman was fine and he did indeed help by laying in the gentleman’s toolbox refusing to move and having a nice snooze!
