Your cat suddenly starts rolling around or acting completely bonkers over a simple little plant?

What even is catnip?

Catnip (or Nepeta cataria) is a plant from the mint family. The active compound in it is called nepetalactone, and it triggers a euphoric response in many cats. It’s a bit like how certain scents can trigger strong memories or emotions in humans. Only slightly more intense.

How it works:

  • The scent of catnip comes from specific pheromones that cats find irresistibly attractive.
  • It affects their limbic system: the part of the brain responsible for emotion and behaviour.
  • According to science, the effect of catnip on cats is roughly comparable to us having a glass of wine or getting a dopamine hit after a good laugh.
  • The effect is temporary (around 10 to 15 minutes), after which cats become unresponsive to it for a while.

There’s no evidence that catnip is harmful to your cat. But as with anything: moderation is key.

Not every cat reacts to catnip

Roughly 30–40% of cats don’t respond to catnip. It’s all down to genetics. So if your cat isn’t fussed, it’s not the product’s fault: your cat simply lacks the “catnip receptor.”

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Kittens under six months usually don’t react to catnip.
  • Older cats may also become less sensitive to it over time.

How to use catnip smartly

Catnip can offer more than just fun: it may also help with behavioural issues, stress, or training.

Handy uses:

  • Got a new scratching post? Sprinkle a bit of catnip on it to pique your cat’s curiosity.
  • Big changes at home? Catnip can have a short-term calming effect.
  • Need more playtime? Combine catnip with toys to encourage movement and activity.

⚠️Note: Don’t overdo it, using it too often will reduce the effect.

Catnip = fun + function

Catnip isn’t a must-have, but for many cats it’s a lovely treat. It’s safe, affordable, and can offer just that little extra dose of fun or calm. If your cat responds well to it, you’ve found yourself a fantastic little tool.
